During 2020 we are finding plastic free alternatives to shampoo, soap and other everyday bathroom toiletries to use in our guest bathrooms (and our own bathroom too of course!). Miles better than those little hotel room bottles – something you will never, ever see at Perfect Shore.
Refuse first, then Reduce
Have you ever done this? You’re going on holiday and you’ve bought a set of those empty mini bottles into which you can decant your usual stuff. No need to make do with whatever’s in the local shop and you’re practically saving the planet at the same time!
I’ve done the empty mini bottle thing, filling them up whilst silently congratulating myself on efficiency and sustainability. But then I found that 100ml of shampoo really isn’t enough to wash my post-beach hair every day, and it’s VERY difficult to squeeze a second one into the one small plastic bag that airport security permits. And anyway I’ve still bought a plastic bottle at home, which I’lll pop into the recycling but will it actually be recycled? In the ideal order of refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot (thank you zerowastehome.com) I’m too near the end.
Far better to refuse plastic in the first place. And in the case of bathroom toiletries there are so many brilliant alternatives now available that there’s really no need for plastic bottles, toothbrushes or toothpaste tubes. These are just a few of the items that you can easily and affordably replace. Think solid shampoo and soap, bamboo toothbrushes and glass toothpaste pots. And of course they’re not just for holiday, you can be seamlessly plastic free from home to holiday and back again.
Mini soap and shampoo now for sale
(update 10 Aug 2020) In our first step we are excited to announce that our guests can buy, at normal retail price, these great little solid soaps and shampoos from Flora e Ser Produtos Naturais:
(By the way, I’ve already learned that solid shampoo and solid soap are different things. One is shampoo and the other is soap. But lots of soap bars are sold as ‘hair and body shampoo’ or ‘shampoo bars’ with claims that all the ingredients are natural and kind and won’t strip the natural oils from your hair. Which is true, and they will clean your hair. But they are really too alkaline and over time are not as good for your hair as proper shampoo, which you can also get in solid form. It’s more expensive than soap but for good reason. Anyway I digress. The internet is full of good articles on ‘soap vs shampoo bar’ and ‘solid shampoo ph’ if you care to find our more.)
